The fourth annual GROW Conference was recently held at the Vancouver Convention Centre attracting a swarm of pioneers, founders, executives, influences and investors from around North America. Polaroid’s Action Camera made its debut in Whistler at the 3rd annual Whistler Longboard Festival which took place July 5-7. As a sponsor of the Big Air Competition, Freestyle Showcase and the World Cup Downhill Race, Polaroid Action amped up the festival with prize giveaways and no shortage of entertainment.
The Polaroid Big Air heated up Olympic Plaza on Friday afternoon showcasing top riders from around the world throwing tricks off a custom-built kicker into a giant Acro Bag. Pulling double duty, Polaroid also played host to their team of riders up at the World Cup Downhill venue that same day. Along with offering a cool place to sit down and chill out, they also gave away a generous supply of cameras to fans and supporters at the race. 2013 will mark the third year of The Whistler Longboard Festival in Whistler. This year's festival is comprised of four main events: Downhill Freeride and Race at The Whistler

Olympic Park. The Festival will take place over four days from Thursday, July 4th through Sunday, July 7th, 2013. It was recently announced by the International Downhill Federation that Whistler's downhill competition has been added to the World Cup Circuit. Its exciting news for Whistler, adding another World Class event to its roster. This year's event will feature live streaming, improved access to the downhill course, advanced timing systems and of course a beer garden to sit back and watch the action with a cold brewsky from the Whistler Brewing Company.

On March 4th, 2010, the Community Foundation of Whistler will launch an inaugural fundraising event in support of the Kathy Barnett Memorial Fund. The fund was created in 2008 in memory of Kathy Barnett, a former Whistler resident and CFOW Director. Kathy was a strong, community-oriented woman who gave of herself for the betterment of others. Together with her husband, Kathy co-founded the Pique Newsmagazine, a successful independent weekly newspaper.
The luncheon will feature a high profile keynote speaker who will address the topic of Women and Leadership, as well as profile women who have received grants from the endowment fund. The event will be held at the beautiful and majestic Fairmont Chateau Whistler and will be hosted by Chris Quinlin. Attendees of the event will have the exciting opportunity to bid on one of a kind Whistler experiences with the company of influential and inspiringwomen and men as mentors for the day. Through a celebration of Kathy’s legacy, the event will inspire local women and build ongoing financial support for the endowment fund.

As the sponsorship lead for this year’s inaugural Eco Fashion Week presented by AVEDA, I have been tasked with the challenge of building a sustainable sponsorship strategy with a sales focus exclusively on organizations that are committed to improving their environmentally efficiency.
Through this process, I have recognized some key strategies to share with you about sustainability, sponsorship and event execution. First priority is to ensure the sponsors you are approaching have a sustainability mission or are working towards one – often found on the partners websites. Sponsorship is a much a partnership, and if your two organizations don't share like minded goals, there is no point pursuing the relationship:
- Seek sponsorships that can help achieve event goals of low waste, ethical sourcing and sustainable operations
- Use green rating programs to help guide you to sustainably minded companies; for example the Green Key Eco-Rating Program recognizes hotels that are committed to improving their environmental performance.
- Approach sponsorship from organizations with locally made, organic and regionally sourced products wherever possible.
- Partner with your local public transportation authorities to ensure there are sufficient and effective modes of public transportation to your venue, if your event is large enough they may put on additional busses to your venue.
- When sourcing your vendors, ensure that they are located in close proximity to the venue
- Minimize the traditional event waste as much as possible; print signage that can be used every year, focus on online marketing campaigns, ensure sponsors “giveaways” at your event are of value to the consumer
- Have a plastic bottle free event! Tap water instead of bottled water is cheaper and of course, greener!
